The result is a hilarious and informative blend of Bible lessons and modern-day applications. Kids ages 6 to 12 will instantly relate to Bible characters and eternal truths presented from a twenty-first-century kid’s perspective. Stories are introduced with improbable questions that will draw young readers in and stimulate their thinking. For example, what if…

Noah’s ark was a cruise ship?

Gideon vs. the Midianites was replayed as a video game?

Nehemiah’s rebuilding of Jerusalem was featured on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition?

These comical illustrations and thoroughly up-to-date retelling of Bible stories will captivate young minds and hearts while maintaining the integrity of the characters and message.

My thoughts:

How many times have we read Bible stories to our kids and had their attention wonder because they just couldn't relate to the Old Testament/New Testament people? The Awesome Book of Bible Stories for Kids tells Bible stories in ways a child/teenager can identify. It gives them what-if scenarios in modern everyday life terminology. I can imagine this book being appreciated in home Bible study and in the church/youth group setting alike. Comical, yet informative, just what kids like! He has his own fan club

But he wasn't always this awesome. He used to be Mr. Comic Book, a resident of Lonelyland. So when he swtiched schools, he slapped on a grin and went from big nerd to big shot.

Meet Happyface. This is his journal.
This unique combination of text and fully integrated art follows the journey of a dorky, quiet, artsy kid as he reinvents himself after moving to a new town, where he's nicknamed Happyface. Peek in his journal and see the world through his hilariously self-deprecating eyes as he learns to shed his comic-book-loving, computer-game playing ways. Join him as he makes new friends, tries to hide from his messy past, forgives the people who have hurt him most, and ultimately learns to face the world with a genuine smile.

My thoughts:

Happyface is not your typical book. It is unique with numerous illustrations and artwork. It is a good, positive read for boys. The only issue I have with Happyface is the small print which may be a turn-off for some kids. She's also way too smart to fall for the charms of man-slut and slimy school hottie Wesley Rush. In fact, Bianca hates him. And when he nicknames her "the Duff," she throws her Coke in his face.

But things aren't so great at home right now, and Bianca is desperate for a distraction. She ends up kissing Wesley. Worse, she likes it. Eager for escape, Bianca throws herself into a closeted enemies-with-benefits relationship with him.

Until it all goes horribly awry. It turns out Wesley isn't such a bad listener, and his life is pretty screwed up, too. Suddenly Bianca realizes with absolute horror that she's falling for the guy she thought she hated more than anyone. And eventually, through this realization, Bianca begins to see how harmful her unhealthy way of dealing with her problems has been, and finds a way to confront them head on.

My thoughts:

Most teens are driven by self-destructive ideas of image and place. Duff is one of those books that address these issues and puts them into perspective for young people...girls and boys alike. The author has written a story that is a must-read. It is well-written, frank, realistic, fast moving, and compelling. Conclusion: we may admire what we see as perfection in our peers; what we don't see is our own special unique self. Absolutely worth the read. Thank you to Hachette Book Group for my review copy.

Pretend You Love Me

Author: Julie Anne Peters
Reading level: Young Adult
Paperback: 304 pages
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers;
Reprint edition (May 10, 2011)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0316127418

Book Description:

In this fresh, poignant novel, Mike is struggling to come to terms with her father's suicide and her mother's detachment from the family. Despite monsoon-force rains and terrible danger lurking around every street corner, the young lieutenant manages to get them to safety, but not without losing his own life. . . .

Years later, on the eve of Ben and Sheere's sixteenth birthday, the mysterious threat reenters their lives. This time, it may be impossible to escape. With the help of their brave friends, the twins will have to take a stand against the terror that watches them in the shadows of the night--and face the most frightening creature in the history of the City of Palaces.

My thoughts:

The Midnight Palace is a good old-fashioned ghost story set in Calcutta in the 1930's. I found it to be a bit darker than the author's previous, The Prince of Mist, even though they do share the same gothic, supernatural overtones. The Midnight Palace is intense and kept me turning pages all evening...just what I would expect in a novel of this genre. But from the minute they cross the threshold of their new home, strange things begin to happen. In that mysterious house still lurks the spirit of Jacob, the previous owners' son, who died by drowning.

With the help of their new friend Roland, Max and Alicia Carver begin to explore the strange circumstances of that death and discover the existence of a mysterious being called the Prince of Mist--a diabolical character who has returned from the shadows to collect on a debt from the past. Soon the three friends find themselves caught up in an adventure of sunken ships and an enchanted stone garden--an adventure that will change their lives forever.

About the Author:

Carlos Ruiz Zafón is the author of six novels, including the international phenomenon The Shadow of the Wind. His work has been published in more than fifty countries, and honored with numerous awards. He divides his time between Barcelona, Spain, and Los Angeles, California.

My thoughts:

Three friends get caught up in a mystery that will forever shadow their lives. This is a novel that will appeal to young and mature readers alike. I found it to have the Victorian gothic overtones of strange old houses, mysterious graveyards, and haunting characters--supernatural elements that make reading fun and exciting. Thanks to Hachette Book Group for my review copy.

God Made The Dinosaurs! / Review

Author: Todd Aaron Smith
Reading level: Baby-Preschool
Hardcover: 10 pages
Publisher: Harvest House Publishers
(July 1, 2011)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0736938435

Book Description:

What’s more fun than exploring the exciting land of long ago? This cardboard book is perfect for my 10 month old grandson. It is very colorful with simple sentences and is small enough for little hands to hold. I also like how it introduces him to God and His creation. The illustrations are delightful, too!

(Thank you to Harvest House Publishers for my review copy.)

Me...Jane by Patrick McDonnell / Review

Author: Patrick McDonnell
Reading level: Ages 4-8
Hardcover: 40 pages
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
(April 5, 2011)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 9780316045469

Book Description:

In his characteristic heartwarming style, Patrick McDonnell tells the story of the young Jane Goodall and her special childhood toy chimpanzee named Jubilee. As the young Jane observes the natural world around her with wonder, she dreams of "a life living with and helping all animals," until one day she finds that her dream has come true.

One of the world's most inspiring women, Dr. Jane Goodall is a renowned humanitarian, conservationist, animal activist, environmentalist, and United Nations Messenger of Peace. In 1977 she founded the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI), a global nonprofit organization that empowers people to make a difference for all living things.

With anecdotes taken directly from Jane Goodall's autobiography, McDonnell makes this very true story accessible for the very young--and young at heart.

About the author:

Patrick McDonnell is the creator of the Mutts comic strip, which recently celebrated its fifteenth anniversary, as well as several bestselling children's books including Wag!, The Gift of Nothing, Just Like Heaven, South, Hug Time, and Art. He has been hailed as "the next Charles Schulz."

Patrick sits on the board of directors of the Humane Society of the United States, with a deep concern for the environment and animal welfore, and has won numerous awards for both Mutts and his animal welfare work. He is the co-creator of Guardians of Being with Eckhart Tolle. He lives in New Jersey with his wife, Karen, their formerly feral cat, MeeMow, and their newly adopted terrier, Amelie.

My thoughts:

Who could NOT love this children's book? It is just delightful. This lovely story of Jane Goodall as a child is filled with colorful illustrations. It is sure to melt the heart and inspire readers of all ages. I absolutely loved it and will share it with my grandchildren. 5 BIG STARS*****!!

Where The Mountain Meets The Moon

Author: Grace Lin
Reading level: Ages 9-12
Paperback: 304 pages
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Reprint edition (April 12, 2011)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0316038636

Book Description:

This Newbery Honor book features magic, adventure, friendship, and even a dragon who can't fly!

In the valley of Fruitless Mountain, a young girl named Minli lives in a ramshackle hut with her parents. In the evenings, her father regales her with old folktales of the Jade Dragon and the Old Man on the Moon, who knows the answers to all of life's questions. Inspired by these stories, Minli sets off on an extraordinary journey to find the Old Man on the Moon to ask him how she can change her family's fortune. She encounters an assorted cast of characters and magical creatures along the way, including a dragon who accompanies her on her quest for the ultimate answer.

Grace Lin, author of the beloved Year of the Dog and Year of the Rat, returns with a wondrous story of adventure, faith, and friendship. A fantasy crossed with Chinese folklore, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is a timeless story reminiscent of The Wizard of Oz. Her beautiful illustrations, printed in full-color, accompany the text throughout. Once again, she has created a charming, engaging book for young readers.

My thoughts:

I thought this would be a book for children only, but found on reviewing it that it appeals to all ages. It is beautifully written; magical; elegant; lyrical; an enjoyable read. Where they discover that Dog has a hidden talent and that treasure might be closer than they ever imagined...

My thoughts:

Great read for boy or girl age 9 through 14.

(Thank you to Hachette Book Group for my review copy.)

THE TIME-TRAVELING FASHIONISTA

Author: Bianca Turetsky
Reading level: Young Adult
Hardcover: 272 pages
Publisher: Poppy (April 5, 2011)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0316105422

Book Description:

What if a beautiful vintage dress could take you back in time?
Louise Lambert has always dreamed of movie starlets and exquisite gowns and longs for the day when she can fill the closet of her normal suburban home with stylish treasures. But when she receives a mysterious invitation to a vintage fashion sale in the mail, her once painfully average life is magically transformed into a time-travel adventure.

Suddenly onboard a luxurious cruise ship a hundred years ago, Louise relishes the glamorous life of this opulent era and slips into a life of secrets, drama, and decadence. . . .

Dreamy and imaginative, The Time-Traveling Fashionista features thirty full-color fashion illustrations to show gorgeous dresses and styles throughout history.

My Thoughts:

What young lady hasn't dreamed of living in a Cinderella world of beautiful clothes and luxury? How does she respond?

This is a well-written, fairy-tale story that I think every young woman will enjoy reading as much as I did. I also absolutely loved the many beautiful full-page fashion illustrations.

(Thank you to Hachette Book Group for my review copy.)

Dewey the Library Cat

Author: Vicki Myron
Reading level: Ages 9-12
Paperback: 224 pages
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Reprint edition (April 12, 2011)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 9780316068703

Book Description:
Now everyone's favorite library cat can inspire a new audience of young readers with his story of courage and love. Like the hardcover, this paperback edition of the middle-grade adaptation of New York Times bestseller Dewey features an 8-page photo insert of the Dew!

In the tradition of Marley: A Dog Like No Other, this is the story of a cat who was more than a pet, and the amazing effect he had on the people around him. Abandoned in a library book drop slot in the dead of winter, this remarkable kitten miraculously endured the coldest night of the year. Dewey Readmore Books, as he became known, quickly embraced his home inside Spencer's public library, charming the struggling small town's library-goers, young and old. As word of Dewey's winning tail, or rather his tale, spread, the library cat gained worldwide fame as a symbol of hope and proof positive that one small cat could change a town, one reader at a time.

My Thoughts:
A kitten is dropped into a book return slot at the local library. It is found tucked into a corner, under one of the books. Scared, weak, and cold, it is nursed back to health by library friends.

This is the true story of a handsome, orange male tabby named Dewey; his love for the library and everyone around him. Everyone also loves Dewey. The story takes the reader through Dewey's life and adventures and ends with his death, which is handled in a gentle and inspirational way by the author.

I am passing this book on to my granddaughter who loves cats. I think she will love Dewey.

(Thank you to Hachette Book Group for my review copy.)

The Duck Song / Review

Author: Bryant Oden
Illustrations: Forrest Whaley
Reading level: Ages 4-8
Hardcover: 31 pages
Publisher: Flinders Press;
1st edition (September 1, 2010)
ISBN-10: 0984395598

Book Description:

A determined duck pleads for grapes at the most unlikely of places: a lemonade stand. Each chapter book includes an educational component and a daring mix of comedy, peril, and timeless values.

When brothers Ethan and Dallin are transported back to the ancient city of Atlantis, they find that Poseidon’s wrath has been kindled—something of his has been stolen and he will destroy the entire city to get it back. Together the boys seek to unravel the mystery, all while escaping from a three-headed dog and his master, outwitting a corrupt magistrate, and battling a slithering thief from the Underworld. Along the way to discovering what Poseidon seeks—as well as finding a way back home—they also make new friends and work to reunite an enslaved girl with her father.

My Review:
This second book in the Traveling Trunk Adentures series is just as exciting as the first, Pirate Treasure. 8-12 year old readers should enjoy the adventures of two brothers, Ethan and Dallin as they travel throughtout history in their magic trunk. Lee
Paperback: 36 pages
Publisher: CreateSpace (February 13, 2010)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1450531024

Book Description:

Ms. Lee's latest book, "Is there a monster over there?" tells the story of Mabel (and her cat, Tiffany) who are afraid of monsters. Mabel thinks they are hiding under her bed or in her closet. One day, she decides to face the monster, and she learns an important lesson about overcoming fears.

My Review:
This book is about Mabel, her cat Tiffany, and Mabel's fear of monsters. It is a story that most children can identify with. I read "is there a monster over there?" to my 3 year old granddaughter, which she seemed to like, although I don't believe she fully understood it at this time. The illustrations are delightful, though, and the story is captivating.

(Thank you to the author for my review copy.)

Make That a Table For Seven / Review

Author: Angie and Storm Davis

Hardcover: 20 pages
Publisher: AuthorHouse (February 1, 2010)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1449072739

Book Description
"Make That a Table for Seven" is a story about two bears left in the woods looking for a home. Ferbie and Peppie are scared and alone and do not think anyone really wants them. One night before dinner, there is a knock at the Grizzly's door, and there stands Ferbie and his sister Peppie. The Grizzly Family is immediately drawn to these two lonely cubs and offer them their home. The Grizzly children, Zeus, Smoo, and Princess, are excited to share their family and have another brother and sister. It is a story, based on real life events, of love, rescue, and redemption from lonely places to safe places. It is about a family expanding in number and love. It is a story that challenges us all to be the hands and heart of God to children in need.

My Review:

This story of unconditional love and acceptance is well-told and highly recommended.

(Thank you to the authors for my review copy.)

For Faithful Friends / Review

Author: Marilyn E. He is frightened of almost everything in life; scared all the time. His only friend is a little mouse who visits him everyday and gives him some wise advice that helps him find faith, meaning in life, and the courage to live fully. Well-written and beautifully illustrated by the author, this book is a must read for a timid child or anyone who enjoys a meaningful story with lots of heart.

(Thank you to the author for my review copy.)

Stop It!

Author: Sally O. But nothing much ever happens in the sleepy little city of Kirkland, Washington, so Chin usually ends up playing with his loyal dog, Eagle, and reading thrilling stories. But one afternoon, both their lives change forever.

While helping his father out in the yard, Chin discovers a shiny rock near the garden pond, and he picks it up. Once he does, Eagle begins to talk! At that moment he realizes that the stone holds magical powers. But why is it in his yard?

My Review:

This fun adventure story is a wonderful read for boys, especially. When Chin finds a magic stone and his dog, Eagle, begins to talk, he knows that things have changed in a drastic way, but how and why are the questions he begins to explore. This is a magical story that will delight ages 7-12 and hold their interest throughout the entire book. It also teaches kids to trust themselves and believe in positive results.

(Thank you to the author for my review copy.)

The Laceyville Monkeys Say the Right Words

Author: Harriett Ruderman

Illustrations by: Beverly Luria

Reading level: Ages 4-8
Hardcover: 32 pages
Publisher: Illusion Press, LLC; 1st edition (March 1, 2009)
Language: English

Book Description:

Harriett Ruderman is delighted to introduce The Laceyville Monkeys, Say the Right Words ... a new book designed to communicate to young children everywhere the power and magic inherent in speaking kindly and saying the right words. Their owner, Miss Hepzibah Mott, brings her beloved monkeys to Laceyville for the big talent contest. You'll meet George the Gorilla, who plays the piano, Jake the Snake who charms all with his cobra dance, Dizzy the Lizard who parades and prances, comedians Bob and the Frog and his friend Tillie the Tortoise, and silly old Granny Scott who says the 'wrong' words and is utterly embarrassed at the results. These characters and others are part of the Laceyville cast, created to entertain and amuse children with their antics and fun, while emphasizing the importance of warm caring words of encouragement and love. The Laceyville Monkeys is written in rhyme and encompasses 32 pages of vividly illustrated characters and scenery that capture the charm and essence of the story.

About the Author:

Harriett Ruderman is a communications professional who has seen the magic of what words can do in reaching goals and fulfilling dreams. The Pure Foundations series is already guiding parents of preteens and teens through potentially awkward conversations. Now two fully illustrated books--one for pre-readers and one for early readers--complete the series.
How God Makes Babies is an age-appropriate introduction to basic sexuality, helping children ages 6 to 9 understand that God created males and females differently and with a purpose, emphasizing that God is a part of each family from conception to death.

From the Back Cover:

Laying the Foundations for Healthy Sexuality An Age-Appropriate Resource for Ages 6 to 9 Children's curiosity often prompts them to ask questions you, as a parent, don't feel ready or able to answer. But it doesn't have to be that way. Dr. Jim Burns, family expert and award-winning author, offers a valuable resource for those uncomfortable--even dreaded--conversations. With biblical, age-appropriate information and illustrations, How God Makes Babies introduces children ages 6 to 9 to the basics of human sexuality. Answering the question of where babies come from, it also emphasizes how children are a part of God's wonderful plan for families. Though not always easy, opening this discussion early helps you lay a solid, godly foundation in your children's lives. By reading this book together, you are giving your children the tools they will need throughout their lives to make God-honoring decisions about their bodies, their self-image, and their relationships. Don't wait until it's too late. A life of purity can begin today. Jim Burns, PhD, founded the ministry of HomeWord in 1985 to bring help and hope to struggling families. Jim hosts the radio broadcast HomeWord With Jim Burns, which is heard daily in over eight hundred communities nationwide, and speaks to thousands around the world each year. He is an award-winning author, whose books include Teaching Your Children Healthy Sexuality. Jim and his wife, Cathy, have three grown daughters and live in California.

My Review:

Questions about sexuality can prove embarrassing for some parents, so this is just the book to help with those intimate issues. The book is biblical based and age appropriate. Why leave your child's sex education to someone else when you can give them the information they seek through reading with them, How God Makes Babies.
(Thank you to BethanyHouse for my review copy.)

God Made Your Body / Review

Author: Jim Burns

Hardcover: 32 pages
Publisher: Bethany House Publishers (October 1, 2009)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0764202111

Ages: 3-5 years

Book Description:

Author Jim Burns believes the key to instilling in children a healthy, values-centered view of sexuality is to start the discussion early--being open and honest at every stage. Now two fully illustrated books--one for pre-readers and one for early readers--complete the series. God Made Your Body provides the basic foundation that God created our bodies and wants us to honor Him with our bodies. Through engaging text and eye-catching, kid-friendly illustrations, children ages 3 to 5 will learn that boys' and girls' bodies are different--and those differences mean boys and girls can grow up to become daddies and mommies.

From the Back Cover:

Laying the Foundations for Healthy Sexuality An Age-Appropriate Resource for Ages 3 to 5 Children's curiosity often prompts them to ask questions you, as a parent, don't feel ready or able to answer. After seeing what mischief he can get himself into, and not finding any, he falls asleep. He dreams of being chased by a giant squirrel. When he falls down a hole, he lands in his toy box, on top of his favorite squeak toys. While playing with the cow, the others (horses, pigs, and ducks) start to grow and move around. Soon all the squeak toys circle Jack and he must find a way out. When he sees an opening, a large duck blocks his path. Jack and the duck try to out bark and out quack each other. Pretty soon Jack sees an opening and makes a run for it. As he does, all the squeak toys vanish in a puff of smoke and a cow sneezing on him awakens Jack. Thinking the cow is his squeak toy, Jack runs inside the house and looks inside his toy box to see if all the squeak toys are there.

My Review:

In my experience, all children love dog stories and this one will certainly hold their attention.

Jack is a very happy dog who loves to play and get into mischief-- until he goes to sleep under a tree and has a dream that his toys are giants that have come alive. He awakes, though, to find his small toys are still in his toy box, just as he left them.

This well-written, nicely illustrated book will delight young children.

(Thank you to the author for my complementary review copy.)

Messy Tessy / Review

Author: Leah Orr
Illustrated by: Josephine Lepore
Paperback: 36 pages
Publisher: AuthorHouse (August 18, 2009)
ISBN-10: 1438993986

Book Description:

While babysitter Aunt Fran is asleep, Messy Tessy finds humorous and amusing ways to entertain herself. She's a well-loved child who is very creative, although, some do call her messy.

Messy Tessy is a story all children will be able to relate with. In fact, he's a kid who lives in the remote Appalachian Mountains where there are no libraries. The only books he and his sister have available to them are the ones brought by horseback every few weeks by the Book Woman.

Cal's sister, Lark, is a bookworm who loves reading more than anything. She could sit all day with a book. Cal just doesn't understand why she likes to read so much, until one day he begins to wonder what makes the Book Woman ride through rain, wind, and snow to deliver the books. When he finally understands her dedication, it changes Cal's life forever.

Written as poetry, this book not only will inspire children to read, but it also gives a small glimpse into the courageous Pack Horse Librarians of Kentucky. The Pack Horse Project was created in the 1930s by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, in order to bring books to the young people of the Appalachian Mountains.

I give it 5 stars for being unforgettable.

Dude, That's Rude! Full-color cartoons and kid-friendly text teach the basics of polite behavior in all kinds of situations while keeping young readers entertained on every page. Kids learn Power Words to use and P.U. Words to avoid, why their family deserves their best manners, how to yawn, how to burp, how to meet new people, how to treat a guest and be one, the right ways to use phones (including cell phones), school manners, mall manners, body manners, potty manners, the Top Ten Table Manners, and the essentials of e-etiquette (politeness online). It may seem like light reading, but it's serious stuff: Manners are major social skills, and Dude, That's Rude! gives kids a great start.

My Review:

Did you know that 8 out of 10 adults say that a lack of manners is a serious problem today? I should say, I'm one of those 8 out of 10. When I was a pre-teen my mother gave me a book on manners and insisted I read it. But that was several years ago and society has changed a lot since then.

Recently, I found this little book, Dude, That's Rude, on Amazon and thought how much fun it would be to review it on my children's book blog. So I ordered it and I wasn't disappointed. It may not be Amy Vanderbilt, but it's "way cool" and gets the good manners point across to children and adults alike.

The illustrations alone will hold anyone's attention and the way good manners are presented by the written word speaks to both pre-teens and teens. It addresses everyday issues like: power words and words that show you might be a clod; how to treat one's family; good school manners; and even mall manners. It discusses just about anything a kid needs to know about social skills.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and will suggest it to my family members and friends.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://readingpath.blogspot.com/2009/08/dude-thats-rude-get-some-manners.html' title='Dude, That's Rude! But before they go ahead with their judgemental plans, the family offers them a tray of fresh apple strudel and invites them to join their family reunion.

This delightful book gives parents and teachers an opportunity to talk to children about friendliness, tolerance, and being good neighbors. It has sold over three million copies and a movie version will soon be released, which I can hardly wait to see.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs begins with Grandpa making pancakes for breakfast, and accidently flips a pancake onto his grandson's head. That evening, while still thinking about the pancake episode, Grandpa tells the children a tall tale about a town that has very unusual weather conditions. It's called the town of Chewandswallow.

In the town of Chewandswallow it rains soup and juice and snows mashed potatoes. The people of the town get their food from whatever the weather brings forth that day. Sometimes it even produces hamburgers and meatballs and all kinds of other good food.

This is an imaginative children's book that delights children of all ages with its creative narrative and expressive illustrations. No wonder it's being made into a movie! Absolutely delightful!

Have You Filled A Bucket Today? I've always heard about the glass being half full or half empty, but never heard of filling a bucket with happiness.

The book tells children that everyone around the world is carrying an invisible bucket. People are happy when their buckets are full and that we need other people to help us fill our buckets. Sometimes people are unkind and our buckets are not as full when that happens.

All sorts of things can help the bucket become full of happiness, like a smile, or someone caring about us. It gives children ideas on how to fill invisible buckets all around them and helps them understand how someone feels when we are mean or thoughtless.

This is such a sweet book with darling illustrations.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://readingpath.blogspot.com/2009/08/have-you-filled-bucket-today-guide-to.html' title='Have You Filled A Bucket Today? The writing is excellent and the illustrations are as well. I wish I could give this unusual children's book more than 5 stars!

(Thanks to the author for my review copy.)

The green Green Pear

Author: Manjula Naraynan

Paperback: 32 pages
Publisher: AuthorSolutions (June 3, 2009)
ISBN-10: 1438969570

Book Description:

What can be done when a little, green Green pear doesn't love himself, and wishes he were, "anything but a green Green pear"? Make him learn otherwise, of course! This book is about one such green Green pear and the journey he takes to learn to love. This book offers kids "everything you need to know about God's Son" and encourages a lifelong relationship with their Lord. Divided into Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How sections, it offers clear explanations and easy understanding for young hearts. It will teach them things like who Jesus is: Jesus is God's Son, and He is also my friend. Where is Jesus? He lives in heaven, but He also lives in my heart. How does Jesus act? He acts with kindness and forgiveness, and He wants me to be like Him. Includes an audio CD with over an hour of songs about Jesus. This is a must-have for every child!

My Review:
The Jesus Book is the perfect book for explaining the story of Jesus to ages 4 years and older. It begins with the Old Testament prophets foretelling His coming, goes on to tell his birth history, what he did in his lifetime, the purpose of His birth, how we can have eternal life, and maps showing where it all took place. An audio CD of 30 Jesus songs is also included with the book.

Some chapters in the book are:
*Who Jesus Is
*What Jesus Did
*What Jesus Taught
*When It Happened
*Where It Happened
*Why It Happened
*How It Happened

Topics included are:
*He healed many
*He rose from the dead
*He brought salvation to the world
*He taught us to pray
*He taught us the golden rule
*Timeline: When It Happened
*When was Jesus born?
*Map of Israel
*Map of Jerusalem
*Where is Jesus now?
*Why was Jesus sent?
*Why did Jesus die on the cross?
and much more!!

This book was written to help children learn about Jesus and how they can have a lifetime relationship with him. It takes what could be considered complex questions and explains them in a way children can understand. The illustrations are also excellent and help tell the stories in each chapter. This book is a wonderful Christian guide for kids.

Wally The Walking Fish

Author: Gary Lamit

Paperback: 28 pages
Publisher: BookSurge Publishing (May 28, 2009)
ISBN-10: 1439225419

Madison and her dog, a yellow Labrador named Cooper, live by the water. Continuing the success of How to Behave and Why-with hundreds of thousands of copies sold, 50,000 in the last year and a half alone! -comes another gem from the trove of Munro Leaf. Considered his second most popular book, Manners Can Be Fun was first published in 1936 and is among Munro Leaf's acclaimed "Fun" series, which includes Grammar, Reading, and History. In his signature style of stick-figure illustrations and wholesome text, this charming guide, in which courtesy does not have to be a chore or a response to scolding, makes manners a delight to learn. With such characters as the Mefirsts and the Whineys, children can laugh while absorbing the elementary rules of thoughtfulness and etiquette. To listen, cooperate, act graciously, and share, among others, are invaluable lessons that should never be underestimated, and that help make happy, well-adjusted, and secure children who will one day grow up to be happy, well-adjusted, and secure adults.

About the Author:

Munro Leaf is the author and illustrator of numerous children's books. He is best known for The Story of Ferdinand, first published in 1936 and a bestseller ever since.

My Review:

I have just recently started collecting children's books, which I plan on reading to my grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Manners Can Be Fun, a book about courtesy, is my newest purchase. It carries a very simple message about respecting other people, including family members--an essential message young children can easily understand and should be taught in the home. The illustrations are those children themselves might draw, and I'm sure would relate to and enjoy. I'm very pleased with this sweet little book and can't wait to share it with my family.

Read and Share Toddler Bible

Reading level: Baby-Preschool
Hardcover: 192 pages
Publisher: Thomas Nelson (July 7, 2009)
ISBN-10: 140031464X

This beautiful hardcover Bible storybook for infants and toddlers is a wonderful way to introduce your child to the Bible. It includes 40 Bible stories, colorful illustrations on every page, and a 60 minute DVD. I am giving it as a gift to all of my grandchildren and expect they will love the stories and the DVD.

It includes stories from both the Old and New Testament, including these:

*Adam and Eve and the Sneaky Snake

*Noah and the Big Boat

*A Baby for Abraham and Sarah

*Rebekah and the Ten Camels

*Joseph and His Brothers

*Baby Moses

*Davis and the Sheep

*Daniel in the Lions' Den

*Mary and the Angel

*Presents for the Baby

*One Lost Sheep

*A Little Boy with a Lunch

*Jesus Goes to Heaven

*Jesus Loves You

It also includes a presentation page where you can write the child's name and date given, plus a letter to the parents page, which explains how the book is written and the best way to use it. Also, after each story, there is a little suggestion box for parents on how to talk to your child about the story.

I would definitely recommend this little Bible storybook to anyone who wishes to raise a child early on the Holy Scriptures. Dane

Perfect Paperback: 105 pages
Publisher: Dane & Dane, LLC.;

First edition (December 29, 2008)
ISBN-10: 0982095600

Product Description:

"Fairy Hunters, Ink." is about a small group of intrepid fairy hunters who go about finding fairies. And they are most unusual fairies. There are Button Fairies, Fire Fairies, Picnic Fairies and fairies of all kinds of things. The book is about fairies but it is also about the relationships between the characters themselves. It has been described by one reader as a combination of "Winnie the Pooh" and "Alice in Wonderland". The characters who thread their way through the book are Ashley, a most curious little girl about 5 years old; Big Rabbit, a stuffed rabbit (but not really stuffed) who is full of knowledge about carrots and many other things; Turtle, whom Ashley and Big Rabbit meet along the way as they chase a particularly mischievous Willow fairy and the narrator, Laura, whose age is never quite clear and who is always getting into trouble along with Ashley. They meet a lot of fairies and a few Gremlins along the way and they learn something about themselves as well. The book is full of word play and rhymes, silliness and seriousness. It can be read to a five year old or by a an eight year old or by an adult."

My Review:

Childhood is a magical time, when it's still easy to believe in fairies and make-believe places. And for some adults we are still mesmerized by fantasy characters and the images that go with them.

Sheila A. Dane has written just such a book. It's filled with fairy adventures and whimsical illustrations by Rose Csorda.

Some chapters which are included are:

*Teacup Fairies

*Turtle Makes A Discovery

*Attic Fairies

*Flute Fairies

*The Clothes Hanger Fairies

*River Fairies

*Ashley discovers a Mud Puddle Fairy

*How we found a Picnic Fairy and a Picnic Gremlin

The book's size reminds me of a child's coloring book with large print and illustrations to match. A child would be very comfortable with the format and fascinated with the stories.

I have also reviewed this book on Amazon.com. If you like my review, please give me a "yes" vote.

(Thank you to the author for my review copy.)

The Patchwork Lady

Author: Mary K. Whittington
Illustrator: Jane Dyer

Ages 4-8
32 pages
Publisher: Houghton Miffin Harcourt Press

The Patchwork Lady lives in a quaint little house. I am so impressed with it, that I am planning on giving it as gifts to my grandchildren.

The book is filled with bright, colorful pictures on each page and comes with 2 high quality CD's with 50 songs on each. Many of the songs are traditional and bring to memory a time in my life when I sang them with my six children, who are now grown up with families of their own. The songs on the CD's are sung in children’s voices which are sure to hold the attention of young people—toddlers and up.

This is a unique book that everyone in the family will use and enjoy. In fact, it would be perfect for Christian “family nights.” It would be a wonderful devotional tool and a fun way to introduce your child to bible scripture that will help them store faith and comfort in their hearts for a lifetime. This is the perfect book for parents, grandparents, Sunday school teachers, youth directors, and home school moms.

On a scale from one to ten, this would score a perfect 10.
